Building Integrated Photovoltaics Markets - 2008

Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is the term used for the architectural, structural and aesthetic integration of PV into buildings. BIPV has existed at some level for several decades; basic architectural integration of solar panels requires no leaps forward in technology. BIPV can replace parts of the building envelope, taking over part of its function and lowering costs. However, a new and exciting generation of BIPV is now beginning to emerge. These are based on flexible laminates and can be integrated directly into building products. In the past, BIPV was characterized by some relatively simple design that hides an otherwise fairly conventional rooftop fixture. Increasingly BIPV means solar cells completely integrated into a roof tile.

A number of factors are making BIPV seem a major near-term opportunity at the present time. One is simply the growing interest in PV as a whole. Another is the advances in organic and thin-film PV technologies, which produce PV materials that are more flexible, lighter weight and lower cost than conventional PV based on crystalline silicon. These newer materials are more suitable for integration into (or onto) building materials of all kinds. Finally, architects are increasingly aware of BIPV and are demonstrating a growing interest in incorporating PV into aesthetically pleasing buildings.
