GDP fell at a rate of 14.2% in 1992, and this negative trend continued up until 1998. Another factor contributing to this downward trend was the economic crisis of 1997–98. However, once the crisis had been resolved GDP began to expand, with a 5.7% growth rate recorded in 1999, a trend which continued until 2006. The major factors behind this rise were rapidly expanding oil and gas sales, government tax reforms, and improved investor confidence. During 1999–2007, the country had one of the highest growth rates, reaching around 8% in 2007. However, the global economic slowdown had an adverse affect on the nation, and since then the Russian economy has been on a downward trend. In 2008, the economy recorded a much lower growth rate of 5.2%, while in 2009 the economy contracted by 7.9%, before recovering in 2010, registering growth of 3.9%."
