• The transport and logistics sector recorded 58 M&A deals in May 2008, a decrease of 21.3%, as compared with the trailing six month (Nov 2007–Apr 2008) average. In value terms it recorded deals worth $2.7 billion, a decrease of 75.7%. Over the same period, M&A activity in the emerging markets declined by 42.7% in volume and 75.7% in value terms.
• M&A transactions declined significantly in the air and rail sectors, while sea and road witnessed an increase (in volume terms) over the last six month average. Companies operating in the shipping and marine transportation segment acquired assets to enhance their fleet capacity.
• The sector recorded nine public offerings, an increase of 145.5% over the six month average, although in value terms, the transactions were worth $1.4 billion, a decrease of 7.1%. Private placement deal activity increased by 11.1% in volume terms over the last six month average.
