Datamonitor's monthly Financial Deal Insights provides a unique insight into deal rationale and the market fundamentals driving the sector.

Report Highlights
The transport and logistics sector recorded 51 M&A deals in August 2008, a decrease of 28.7% when compared to the trailing six-month (February 2008 to July 2008) average. Over the same period, M&A activity in the emerging markets increased by 10.3% in volume terms and 72% in value terms.

Marine transportation companies focused on acquisitions to increase the scale of their services and remain cost effective. With major air carriers outsourcing their support and aviation-related services, M&A activity in the segment is expected to increase in the near future.

The month recorded two public offerings worth $239m. The deal volume recorded a decrease of 64.7% and the aggregate deal value declined by 82.6% against the trailing six-month average. The liquidity crunch in the global credit markets and a weaker economic growth outlook could adversely affect valuation in the transport and logistics sector.
