The Germany Road Freight Outlook is part of the European Road Freight series, which assesses the road freight industry, key road transport indicators, major trends and challenges affecting the road freight sector and the key road freight service providers. The report also forecasts the outlook for road freight transportation in Germany.

The German road freight market is the largest and amongst the most developed in Europe. The German road network is arguably the best in Europe with over 12,000 kilometers of motorways. The extensive road network is also well connected to other modes of transport with the help of freight villages which too are well spread across the country.

As it is vital for manufacturers to distribute their products to end users, trucking services are highly important. The overall market is highly fragmented, with a large number of smaller players serving a variety of customers. Companies however, are reeling with an increase in tolls for heavy goods vehicles as well as increased fuel prices.

The industry, with the aim of reducing its carbon footprint, is mulling over eco-friendly ways of transporting goods. The government, on its part, has put in place low emission zones in urban areas in key cities such as Hannover, Berlin and Frankfurt. The country is home to two of the largest road freight firms in Europe, DHL and Schenker.
