Highlights
August was a quiet month, with just 30 competitor developments analyzed in the Payment Card Competitor Tracker. This is less than the 53 developments recorded in the previous month and is the lowest number of developments recorded in the last 12-months.
Asia Pacific witnessed the most activity, with 11 developments in total. This is slightly below the 12-month trend of 15. There were eight developments in North America, which is also less than half the 12-month average.
In August, the number of developments in new emerging technologies such as mobile payments was ahead of the 12-month trend. The most interesting stories related to Visa and Akbank testing DeviceFidelity's micro SD-based mobile payment solution in Turkey and PayPal launching a mobile payment service for merchants.
