Highlights
In September, 46 competitor developments were analyzed in the Payment Card Competitor Tracker, which is less than 30 developments recorded in the previous month and less than 53 developments recorded in July. In fact, this is also below the 12-month average of 50.
There were 18 developments in North America, which is in line with the 12-month average of 19. Typically, this region accounts for the majority of activity. With 14 developments in total Asia Pacific was the second busiest region for the competitor activity. This is also in line with the 12-month trend.
Although, surprisingly there were no notable contactless, online payment or prepaid card stories this month there were a couple of interesting mobile technology related developments annouced in September, entailing ANZ and MasterCard extending money transfer services to iPhones and BlackBerry smartphones.
