There are currently 100 drugs in the pipeline for melanoma, thyroid cancer and neuroendocrine tumors with 16 in late-stage. After years of little progress there are drugs in pre-registration for each indication. The markets are smaller than other indications but not all the unmet needs will be fulfilled providing commercial opportunities for drug developers seeking to enter the markets.

Molecular targeted therapies and immunotherapies constitute the majority of the 70 drugs in the melanoma pipeline. There are eight late-stage drugs which are forecast to achieve sales of $675m by 2019. Some of these drugs have shown significant clinical benefits and look set to be the first drugs approved for melanoma for 12 years.Multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors dominate the thyroid cancer pipeline. There are four late-stage drugs which are forecast to achieve sales of $97m by 2019. It is likely that at least one of the late-stage drugs will be the first agent approved specifically for medullary thyroid cancer.Cytotoxics constitute the majority of the 13 drugs in the neuroendocrine tumor pipeline. However, the three late-stage drugs are immunotherapies and targeted therapies and are forecast to achieve sales of $185m by 2019. The severe lack of current therapy means that uptake will be high in this indication even though the patient population is small.
