The UK Road Freight Outlook is part of the European Road Freight series, which assesses the road freight industry, key road transport indicators, major trends and challenges affecting the road freight sector and the key road freight service providers. The report also forecasts the outlook for road freight transportation in the UK.

The UK road freight industry is amongst the largest and most developed in Europe, with an extensive and well connected road transport network. The industry has matured over the years, with the share of outsourced business rising steadily over the past decade.

The industry has witnessed hectic activity at the company level, with one of the biggest road freight firms in the UK, Christian Salvesen, being acquired by the French giant, Norbert Dentressangle, making the resultant entity one of the largest players in the European road freight market.

However, the industry has been facing tough times with increasing operating costs, as well as costs of compliance with government directives. High levels of taxes on petrol mean that the price of fuel in the UK is higher than the EU average, which affects the competitiveness of UK road freight providers vis-à-vis foreign operators.
