The total volume of fuel sold through the service station network in the UK fell in 2009 for the second consecutive year. Gasoline consumption declined at a faster rate than diesel, dropping 2.9% in 2009, while diesel sales fell 1.7% on 2008.
The number of service stations in the country fell by 2.9% in 2009, to 9,013 sites at the beginning of 2010. Datamonitor expects this number to decline further in 2010. While the majority of oil companies reduced their number of sites, supermarket retailers including Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury and Asda all added to their networks in 2009.
At the start of 2010, 84% of service stations in the UK featured a shop larger that 10 sq m. BP has the largest network of sites with a shop in the UK, followed by Texaco, Shell and Esso. 62% of service stations in the UK feature either a roll over, jet or tunnel car wash installation.
