The Spanish defence industry is likely to experience the same pressures affecting that of many of its European partners. As developed countries see defence budgets squeezed in an era of financial crisisinduced austerity, contacts with emerging powers in Asia become ever more important. Domestically the Spanish government has been putting defence spending under review as they try to tackle the fears of bond markets. Spain's large deficit has worried investors after the crises in Greece, Ireland and Portugal leading the government to announce unpopular and significant cuts across the board. Spanish defence firms are likely to see contracts lapse and investment delayed.
The Spanish defence firm Compania Espanola De Sistemas Aeronauticos (CESA) has announced that it has signed a deal with Indian firm Wipro Infrastructure Engineering for the manufacture of defence and aerospace components. The firm, which makes precision engineered components, will invest US$15mn in a new production facility in Devanahalli. A specific production line at the Devanahalli will produce actuators and associated products, which are used in landing gears and flight control systems.
Meanwhile, the Navantia shipyard in Spain has won part of the work for the three Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD) being produced for the Australian Navy. The programme to construct the destroyers has been hit hard by delays and cost overruns, becoming something of a political issue in Australia. The destroyers are based on the F100 design for the Spanish navy and Navantia's shipyards will see as many as five 'steel blocks' for the ship's construction redistributed outside of Australia.
Spanish police have managed to interdict the export of nine military helicopters to Iran. The Bell-112 helicopters had originally been purchased by Spanish businessmen in Israel. The men arrested are alleged to have failed to have secured the correct licences and permissions for the export of the helicopters to Iran. The helicopters, along with a supply of spare parts of the Venezuelan military, are believed to have been worth around US$140mn.
Ministers from the four Eurofighter nations – Spain, France, Germany and the UK – have given their support to a proposal to integrate active electronically scanned array radars. The announcement of the move came from BAE Systems, which said that funding for the move is expected in order for BAE and Selex Galileo to develop the system to the satisfaction of the four nations. The integration process is a key step if the Eurofighter Typhoon is to be sold to major military importers such as India, who are expecting such a package as a part of the tender offers.
