The Western European Gas Market Outlook 2009 Growth strategies, performance and SWOT analyses Report Overview European gas demand was volatile through 2008, with some countries seeing slight declines in demand. However, the longer term forecast is continued growth for the Western European gas market as new gas-fired power plants come on-stream. ‘The Western European Gas Market Outlook 2009’ is a newly updated management report that examines the role of gas within each of the major Western European utilities markets and analyses the differences that exist in terms of gas self sufficiency, and future growth of demand. This report provides new and updated analysis of 19 Western European gas markets, with detailed data on supply and demand balances. Each country profile features supply and demand overviews, an examination of key governmental, legal and political influences on the sector and an analysis of wholesale trading and the pipeline, LNG and storage infrastructure. Key Findings Gas is a significant energy source in Austria’s primary energy mix, currently accounting for 26% of primary energy consumption. At present, an estimated 20% of Russian gas exports are routed through Austria, providing the country with a greater security of supply. Germany has a large number of active players in the ownership and operation of gas distribution, transmission and storage. Distribution is particularly fragmented, with an estimated 700 regional distribution companies known as Stadtwerke. Fortum has been expanding its role in the Finnish gas market and now owns 31% of Gasum, Finland's main gas company and operator of the national gas grid Italy is a major consumer of gas, which now accounts for 39% of primary energy demand. Supply sources are highly diversified, with pipeline gas sourced from the Netherlands, Russia, Norway and Algeria, as well as LNG delivered from Algeria and Nigeria. Strong demand growth and a liberalized market have made Spain an attractive target for European gas players. Gas Natural’s position has been eroded by foreign players such as Eni and E.ON, in addition to other domestic utilities players including Union Fenosa and Iberdrola. Key features • Profiles of each country’s gas infrastructure including transit and distribution pipelines and their ownership, storage capacities and full colour maps of gas grids. • An understanding of Western European gas regulation, including local legislation, competitive conditions and market reforms. • Gas supply data in billion cubic metres as well as production, pipeline imports and exports by country and LNG imports. • Gas demand data by consumer type divided into residential, non-residential and power generation in billion cubic metres. • An overview of wholesale gas trading market in each country focussing on the market owners and operators, the active players, liquidity and future prospects. • Gas demand forecasts for each country to 2020, in addition to market trends detailing gas production and demand by sector.
